Do you feel prepared to answer the question, “my kid is transitioning--what does that even mean?” This workshop will guide clinicians through different aspects of transition and language around gender identity. Upon completion of this course, clinicians will have the information necessary to explore the process, and provide appropriate resources to clients and their families. Therapists treating this population need to have an awareness as to their own aspects of identity, and how that might influence treatment outcomes. Using themselves as examples, the workshop presenters will discuss these complex dynamics that often lead to challenges in the therapy environment. Modalities of both individual and family therapy will be covered.

At the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to

  • Discuss and understand gender dysphoria and gender euphoria and how these might influence gender transition
  • Identify different aspects of transition (social, legal, medical, educational) and how to assist youth and family in timing and appropriateness of each step
  • Explore their (clinicians) identity and how it might impact the therapy process
