Workshop Description:

The workshop is intended to help attendees understand the nature of expert witness testimony as well as testify in an ethical and effective manner. I will review the stages and goals of expert witness testimony. I will include a discussion of what the professional literature and research has identified as important elements which will include a focus on the issue of diversity.

Workshop Objectives:

  1. To understand the nature of expert witness testimony. Maintaining an appreciation of the definition helps guide ethical behavior.
  2. To understand the steps involved in expert witness testimony.
  3. To understand the goals of expert witness testimony.
  4. To be aware of strategies that can enhance one's ability to testify.
  5. To be mindful of various ethical issues associated with testifying.

About the Presenters:

After providing clinical services at Sinai Hospital and the National Rehabilitation Hospital for several years, I developed an independent practice in forensic psychology and eventually became board certified in forensic psychology. I am licensed in Maryland as well as Washington, DC. Relevant to the proposed talk, I have testified as expert witness in approximately 200 times in several state and federal courts. The focus of my practice is in criminal forensic psychology and includes addressing psycho-legal issues such as competency, criminal responsibility, disputed confessions/Miranda, waiver of jurisdiction, and presentencing matters.
